Leaving the Lake behind, we begin climbing the Ghisallo Colle which ends at the famous Santuario Madonna del Ghisallo a pilgrimage for cyclists from all over the world who come to be blessed by the Patron Saint of the cyclists.
Today’s climb is to the base of the Muro di Sormano a classic of the Giro di Lombardia and one of the most feared climbs by professional cyclists.
One of the most charming climbs starting from the magnificent scenery of Lake Como, is the one starting from the village of Nesso and ending on the top of Pian del Tivano, where the astronomic observatory is situated and where is the famous “Muro di Sormano” arrival.
On the peak there is a panoramic terrace, right on the Swiss border but still in Italian territory, where we can enjoy a spectacular view, especially in the west direction. There, the sight sweeps from the near Lake Lugano as far as the Alps. The highest mountain visible to the naked eye is Mount Rosa (4.634 m) but you can also catch a glimpse of Mount Cervino (4,468 m) with its pyramidal-like rocky peak. For this reason, the locality is called “the Balcony of Italy”.
The route leading to the top is beautiful, totally surrounded by woods while the car traffic is very low.
Starting from the banks of Lake Como we will cycle about 25 km, pedaling through one of the nicest and fascinating valleys in Lombardy and, once at the summit, we can enjoy a really breathtaking view.
The external tour of Lake Como is surely one of the most exciting and pleasant routes that the Lombard land can offer to a passionate cyclist. It is a “classic” and all the champions have done it, either during a race or during a training session. Through this itinerary you can discover the most attractive resorts of the Provinces of Como and Lecco.
The climb is characterized by a narrow, winding road and by wonderful panoramic viewpoints over the lake and the surrounding mountains. During the first kilometers the climb proceeds in a series of hairpin curves then the road climbs up through the vegetation offering marvelous views of the lake as well as of the Swiss mountains.
Como is a historic small town of Roman origin, very close to the Swiss border only a few kilometers, with a privileged position between the lake and the mountains, a crossroads of the commerce between North Italy and Europe.
Renowned for its stunning scenery, glamorous town and the amazing road in cycling history.
Como offers many attractions, sites of interests, museums, beautiful villas and fairy tale gardens, sport facilities and lively cultural activities.
Milan is Italy’s city of the future, a fast-paced metropolis where creativity is big business, looking good is compulsory and after-work drinks are an art form.
